Trade Deadline Fun

Tuesday was the trade deadline in the NHL. After Tuesday the teams are pretty much set for the rest of the year. Some teams gear up for the playoffs, while other teams sell off their good players in the hopes of getting back some young talent. My Dallas Stars were active on Tuesday picking up 27 year-old Brad Richards from Tampa Bay. Well tonight Mr Richards picked up 5 points in his Dallas Stars debut. Not bad eh? To be honest, I'm super stoked about the Stars chances at bringing the Stanley Cup to north Texas this June. Brad Richards is cash money in the playoffs, and Dallas already has a solid squad. 2008 could be our year! (Sorry Leaf Fans)

You Think THIS Is Cold?

As I look back on this winter, I don't have many fond memories. It seems like it's been snowing non-stop since November, and the temps have been arctic-like. It has to be one of the worst winters in the last 25 years. But no matter how bad we think this winter has been, it pales in comparison to 1911. Check out these pictures of Niagara Falls.

What Is Loyalty?

An interesting development in the world of Toronto sports. Let me throw some names at you and how Toronto sports fans treated them.

Damon Stoudamire (wanted out of Toronto) - Hated

Vince Carter (wanted out of Toronto) - Hated

Roberto Alomar (wanted out of Toronto) - Hated

Tracy McGrady (wanted out of Toronto) - Hated

Mats Sundin (wanted to stay in Toronto) - Hated

Does that make sense to you? Don't get me wrong, I think the Leafs would have benefited greatly had Mats chosen to go. But he said he likes the city, the team, the (losing) atmosphere so he wants to stay. Now Leaf fans are mad. WHAT!?!? Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to me either. Will it damage his reputation as the greatest Leaf ever? I don't think he's in the top 5 before this decision. Well to you Leaf fans, I hope you keep losing and end up with Steven Stamkos. My Stars will continue to win, and maybe their defenseman Trevor Daley will bring the cup to his hometown of Toronto in the summer. After all it's the closest Leaf fans will get without a trip to the Hockey Hall Of Fame.

Oh! The Controversy!

Tonight on the Slam I interviewed Brian McLaren, who I think is one of the foremost minds in Christianity today.... I knew he was somewhat controversial, but I didn't expect the reaction I got. A number of listeners (primarily adults) expressed their concern with Mr McLaren and the Emergent Church movement. One listener emailed me a quote from the aforementioned Brian McLaren where he suggests that a buddhist who becomes a Christian shouldn't foresake his buddhist friends, and leave the buddhist community. Interesting. I think this emailer mistook what Brian meant. Did he mean he should continue being buddhist? I don't think so. I think he meant he should still "fellowship" with his buddhist friends, and stay true to the christian religion he has become a part of. I mean, if he leaves that community, who will deliver the good news of the gospel message to them? An outsider? I think relationship is one of the best ways to connect with people. If evangelism is the goal, isolating yourself from the secular isn't going to get the job done. Here's an article I found that touches on that point (and many others.)

Earlier tonight I was talking about Frank Caliendo getting an extension for his late night tv show "Frank TV." I got a buncha calls asking who this dude was, because I said he's hillarious and you gotta see his impressions. So here's the promo for the tv show. Family Day

The first ever Family Day in Ontario is now in the books. I'm not sure I'm a big fan of having a Monday off in the middle of winter, I think sometime in June would be nice. But Crystal and I decided to make the best of our day off. We took Snax to the park down the street and played in the snow with her. The temperature was a nice 2 or 3 degrees so the snow was great for throwing snowballs and building snow creatures. Crystal made a "snowsnax" and I think she did a pretty good job. Of course we took pictures, and I think we might have next year's Christmas card! I hope you enjoyed you family day... Spring is coming soon!

Valentines Blunder

I dislike giving presents. Actually I like giving presents, I don't like the pressure I put on myself to give a perfect present. I thought I did alright this year, I got a buncha stuff Crystal said she wanted and needed. I pilled the haul into a fancy pink gift bag and filled in the top with some white tissue paper. "Good Job AJ" I told myself as I placed it on her jewellery box. Well she opened her gift today and I screwed something up. She wasn't disappointed, but I sure was. I screwed up again! You see she wanted these shoes, and took note of the color, size and style of what she wanted. Then I went back to the store on my own and picked them up... or so I thought. You see the shows were on a plastic hanger that said size 10 (her size). Turns out the shoes were size 6 on a size 10 hanger! ARGH! I didn't check the actual shoes for the size. I'M A KNOB! She smiled about it, but inside I was pretty upset at myself. Hopefully she can exchange them for the correct size.

Journey To The Unknown

I spent a good chunk of the day in Toronto today. Only an hour down the road, but it felt like a foreign country. Let me explain what I mean. I made a pit stop at the Eaton Centre and I felt out of place. Not because I don't lack the income required to shop at Abercrombie & Fitch, Coach or Dolce & Gabbana, but because no one was speaking my language. I used the bathroom, where 2 (sounded like) Polish guys were speaking their native tongue. I stopped at the water fountain and eavesdropped on a group of (I think) Chinese business men talking shop. I walked through the parking garage where I encountered a man who only spoke Spanish, (sadly I couldn't tell him where he parked his car). It was wild! Living in Barrie I seemed to have forgotten just how multi-cultural Toronto is. Too bad I didn't run into any Estonians looking for the food court. Then I could have been somewhat useful.

Oh The Irony!

Last night I posted a couple videos of people licking poles in the dead of winter. Well this morning I got my just desserts. You see I keep a log of mileage on my car (I'm not really sure why) and this morning was no different from any other one. I got in my car, started it up, pulled the pen out of the centre console and put it in my mouth while I grabbed my log book. When I went to grab the pen from my mouth, my tongue decided to go with it. It turns out the metal pen grew attached to my nice warm tongue in the -20 degree weather. What did I do? I just pulled harder! The pen released it's death grip on my tongue and I wrote down the starting mileage for the day. But wait! My tongue is stinging and there's something attached to the tip of my pen. Yes the pen head decided to take a small chunk of my tongue with it! Drinking coffee, orange juice and even water stings pretty good. I guess I deserved it.

Polar Bear Dare

When it gets this cold it sucks. I'm sorry but, I don't understand how you could possibly find anything positive when the temperatures go down to -25. OK, maybe there's one thing good about it. People decide to lick poles and post the video on YouTube. Watch and enjoy.

I've never had enough guts to lick a pole in winter. First off they are grossly dirty, and I don't think I'd enjoy having my tongue stuck to one of these filth traps.

Oh Mr Sun!

I hate Thursdays! Tuesdays and Thursdays actually. Why? Meetings all day. (But that's another blog in itself) I haven't always hated Tuesdays and Thursdays, only recently. And I think I know why. I noticed something today... Something unusual for a Thursday. When my alarm went off I didn't wish I could go back to sleep and wake up on Friday. What made me bound out of bed, excited to wake up? The sun. "THE SUN?!?" The sun. Something about the sun shining in through my window made me momentarily forget about meetings, digging my car out from under 3 feet of snow and the fact we have no cereal in the cupboard. I hear about people who have S.A.D. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder) but those people are usually heavily medicated and in padded rooms alone. The room I'm alone in doesn't have padding, thus making me "normal." Maybe there is something to this seasonal mood thing.

I used to LOVE Tuesdays and Thursdays... they were skimboarding with Kent days. Get up early, head to the beach and get in an early morning skim session before going to work. Wait a second... My dislike for these days didn't really manifest itself until the snow came. Hmmm. Maybe the constant "cloudy with frequent flurries" forecast has been getting me down. I know I love the warm sunny days that summer brings, but I didn't really think it was possible for the weather to affect my mood so much. I guess I'll never be able to live on the rainy west coast. Oh well... I love living in Barrie anyway (in the summer).

Let The Music Move You

Today I realised just how powerful music can be. I went to the gym and began my workout as usual. Threw on the headphones and worked out to my usual playlist. But then halfway through my workout, my MP3 player suddenly died on me. I pulled it out of my pocket, flipped it over and saw the battery logo flashing, mocking me. I decided to push through and finish the workout, who needs music anyway? Well I had nothing. I could barely do 15 minutes on the treadmill, barely lift half the weight I normally do... It sucked. I have no idea what the music does to me, but my performance went downhill once the tunage stopped. Is music a performance enhancing drug? If you've seen the Keanu Reeves movie Hardball you know it is. Next thing you know they will be testing for music implants on professional athletes.

One thing I dislike about living in Canada is we never get the good Super Bowl ads. I don't know why, but it seems the Canadian companies settle for "ok" instead of striving for excellence in their ads like their American counterparts. Super Bowl Madness

Last night I watched the Super Bowl in the friendly confines of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Barrie. It was a great night, lots of games and as TON of food to be eaten. One thing about the night surprised me though. Hardly anyone watched the game! Most of the 200 people were off playing guitar hero, gladiator joust or just chillin in the lobby. The sanctuary was pretty much empty, there may have been 20 of us in there actually watching the big game. In fact, the dude that won the "best seats in the house" contest didn't even use them! Despite the poor viewership for most of the game, the sanctuary was packed out for the 4th quarter. Not even guitar hero 3 could keep people away from what may have been the best Super Bowl game I've ever seen.

In New York City!

This is one amazing video! #1 the fact they pulled this off is pretty sweet. #2 they did it in New York City! I'd love to be able to do something like this at Union Station in Toronto. Watch and be amazed!
